What happens when Vendor Warranties Expire?

Vendor Warranties don’t last forever. Then you are hit with a huge bill for extended maintenance. The question is: Do I have an option? You do now…

More and more companies are keeping IT hardware in service for longer—frequently outstripping the standard warranty, and sometimes reaching beyond the manufacturer’s commitment to its own equipment. Neither situation necessitates sending more money to the vendor, just to protect against hardware failures, bugs, and other problems.

    Warranty Support Renewals

When the original warranty, Care Pack, or other agreement with the vendor expires, customers should weigh up the pros and cons of renewing the maintenance directly with the vendor against alternatives which can be cheaper and delivery the same, if not better, hardware support.

LifecycleStor offer the same extended warranty service at costs of 75% less than the vendor charges. Most contracts will include 24/7 remote monitoring, full component coverage, on-site parts installation, and other benefits of any vendor support arrangement.

The end-of-service-life game continues. Original equipment manufacturers want your support pence for a while, but their ultimate goal is to keep you to their preferred hardware lifecycle. If you purchase new hardware, the vendor will eventually rescind support service for your older gear.

Many IT professionals believe EOSL is the end of the road. But that’s not true anymore. LifecycleStor can provide vendor quality support long after the vendor walks away. While some put their own time limits on such post-EOSL support contracts, LifecycleStor does not. We support whatever equipment our clients need in their environment, for as long as they need it.

By cutting down on premature upgrades and all the costs that come with them—capital expenditure, training, migration, etc. we help clients realise even greater savings and affordable contracts with vendor level support.

Companies are facing increasing pressure to reduce costs, but still need to find ways to improve operations.

To extend legacy hardware lifecycles is fast becoming a chosen way forward and not only reduces maintenance costs but also allows companies to push back unnecessary hardware refreshes, allowing organisations to continue to use hardware that is still fit for purpose rather than being forced into replacing it.

Balancing essential production and legacy hardware can present challenges, but the added complexity of such an environment is becoming increasingly necessary to maximise the value of data centre systems.

LifecycleStor can resolve many of these issues by giving IT Managers a straightforward, extended support service, regardless of the equipment age or vendor. This lets you concentrate on your core business, safe in the knowledge that your legacy equipment is being supported in a cost-effective manner.

    • Cost

LifecycleStor support is typically far more cost-effective, making your support budgets stretch further.

    • Flexibility

We provide and support bespoke support contracts, providing flexibility to suit any requirements.

    • Simplification

Our Support Portal allows you to simply manage your support contracts across different storage, server and networking equipment.

    • Duration

LifecycleStor can provide extended support for longer than most vendors, giving you more time to plan and implement infrastructure upgrades.

    • Value

Our services can be tailored to suit your requirements, with support contracts from three months through to five years.

    Isn’t cloud storage great?
    13.10.16

You’ve got to admit, cloud storage services such as iCloud and OneDrive are really handy for personal use, allowing you to take loads of photos on your smartphone, safe in the knowledge that if something happens to it, you don’t lose that once-in-a-lifetime snap that you took on holiday.  And with subscription services like Office […]

You’ve got to admit, cloud storage services such as iCloud and OneDrive are really handy for personal use, allowing you to take loads of photos on your smartphone, safe in the knowledge that if something happens to it, you don’t lose that once-in-a-lifetime snap that you took on holiday.  And with subscription services like Office 365 offering users 1TB of cloud storage each for very low headline prices, it really does seem like very good value.

But is it the right choice for enterprise data?  Often the answer is no, whether for performance reasons, data sovereignty reasons, or the often-overlooked cost of getting your data out of the cloud and stored somewhere else if the service levels or commercial model change in the future.

If you’re considering cloud storage, talk to LifecycleStor first, as we can offer you impartial advice on whether cloud storage is right for you.

Once upon a time, the way an application communicated with the underlying storage system was simple. The application used the host’s operating system to control all storage access, and the host worried about which disk(s) it would use and how. Then, along came shared storage arrays which allowed multiple hosts to share a common storage system, but the host operating system still took care of things, presenting the storage back to the applications as it always had.

But these days, there are more specialised storage systems, like Centera, as well as the increasing number of cloud storage systems, and these use APIs (Application Program Interfaces) for the applications to communicate. This is all well and good, until you want to migrate your application from one storage system to another.

If the new system doesn’t use the same protocols as the old one, then you could be in for some trouble. While there are various ways of migrating the data from the old system to the new (all of which LifecycleStor are expert in, and would be more than pleased to talk to you about!) but also the applications themselves also need to be able to ‘see’ their data on the new storage system. If the application doesn’t (or can’t) use the correct API then you may need some sort of gateway. But if it does, the chances are that the applications’ internal databases will need to be updated. Again, LifecycleStor can help, as we are able to do this very thing for numerous major applications – relieving you free to choose the most relevant storage system for your applications.

When you check into a hotel, or you’re in a coffee shop and using the WiFi, what’s your first thought when your applications run slow? Probably to blame the WiFi. Most people do, but it’s not always the WiFi’s fault. Good application performance depends on so many links in a very long chain – the WiFi being one of the very last. Chances are, the network that the WiFi is connected to may not have enough capacity to cope with the ever-increasing number of users who are making more and more use of data while out and about.

And if you’re a company that provides WiFi for your customers, then your WiFi is the best way for you to disappoint or delight your customers.

With the ever-increasing amount of unstructured data from users’ home drives and project folders, plus the continual rise in the amount of structured data which needs to be retained for ever-longer periods, chances are your current storage system is filling up at quite a pace.

With our consultative approach, and by using our own NASessor tool along with other specialist analysis software, we can properly analyse your data and make informed recommendations on what products are most relevant to you, whether it be a new storage platform or a mixture of an archive platform with lower capacity tier 1 storage, but also to help you understand how to migrate from your existing platform to any new solution. This migration element is often overlooked, and without the correct tools and expertise, a seemingly simple task can consume much more resource than you’d originally thought.

Maintenance – Vendor vs 3rd Party
    23.09.16

Most companies that buy new storage also purchase vendor maintenance agreements. These companies are used to vendor agreements and feel safe with them. Most companies that buy new storage also purchase vendor maintenance agreements. These companies are used to vendor agreements and feel safe with them. After all, the vendor made the equipment, it issues software and firmware updates, and it usually has a strong international presence with strong engineering resources.

On the other hand, a vendor’s size can become unwieldy, and this often shows in their lack of flexibility. Vendors typically have a strict set of one-size-fits all SLAs, and escalations can be cumbersome and frustrating. Vendors also have very limited multi-vendor support, so you are left with managing multiple OEM contracts. And, the way prices are trending, you’ll also end up paying through the teeth for it.

    Are there any alternatives?

YES! Once you learn about third-party IT maintenance, its flexibility is hard to resist. Third-party maintenance companies, like LifecycleStor tend to be much more flexible with SLAs, customising your agreement to fit specific requirements. Maintenance costs, especially on older equipment, can be much less expensive with third-party providers. Escalations typically happen more quickly and fluidly, and our case, you are placed directly in contact with top engineers without having to jump through the escalation hoops. Third-party maintainers also support a much larger variety of equipment and can bundle a variety of vendors into a single maintenance contract, reducing the number of maintenance contracts you have to manage.

LifecycleStor is the fastest growing 3rd Party Maintenance company in the world with top level, industry trained engineers and 100% customer satisfaction it is easy to understand why.

So, what is Third Party vendor Maintenance?

Companies like LifecycleStor offer high-quality vendor maintenance, as well as other vendors, but are not affiliated with any vendor. Employing only the highest trained Level 3 engineers, experienced with vendor hardware and code, we offer a comprehensive vendor maintenance service that encompass:

Post-EOSL support. Many customers first become aware of third party maintenance when vendor ends primary support on a key piece of hardware. Rather than upgrading, customers find they can keep their storage in place with support by using a third party maintenance provider at a much lower cost that renewing the maintenance with vendor or refreshing the environment.

Post-warranty support. Even before EOSL, third party vendor maintenance offers numerous advantages, including lower cost, better responsiveness, and more flexible options than the vendor’s maintenance. As a result, many customers switch from vendor to an alternative provider as soon as the initial warranty expires.

Single Contract. To make life easier for Data Centre and other IT managers, we offer contracts that can incorporate equipment from multiple vendors under a single contract. One number to call for all the equipment covered, as well as spares on site.

Why is 3rd Party Maintenance winning market share from the vendors?

Beyond offering the range of service options that IT leaders have been seeking, third party vendor maintenance has challenged vendors by providing:

Cost. Contracts are available at 30% to 70% less than vendor, meaning you can save substantial amount of money by selecting a third party maintenance provider rather than renewing with vendor.

Performance. When you take 3rd Party Maintenance from LifecycleStor you’ll have immediate access to a Level 3 engineer dedicated to your account, who can arrive on site promptly, parts in hand, whenever a problem arises. Just choose a support level, and we’ll meet or exceed the SLAs, and you will have spares on site for an even quicker fix.

Flexibility. A customisable suite of vendor maintenance services, the ability to support equipment long after EOSL, multi-vendor capabilities, and other features make LifecycleStor a truly customer-focused maintenance provider.

If this is the first you’re hearing about alternative support providers, find out more with by calling our specialist team on 0844 884 9585 and see if you want to join the stampede from vendor to third party maintenance with LifecycleStor.

This weekend I was volunteering at my local railway museum in Essex, giving people cab rides in what we affectionately call “the W.D.” which is a fairly small (by railway standards) diesel shunter, originally built for the War Department in 1945 (hence the name). When people come up into the cab, they are always rather put-off by the very rudimentary controls – there is no ‘console’ or ‘dashboard’ as such – just a collection of dials and levers fitted directly to the bulkhead with all the valves and pipes on show. However, after a very short while, it all becomes pretty straightforward and you get used to the foibles of operating an old machine.

The thing that always surprises people about this little engine though is just how long it remained in ‘active service’ – serving from the end of the war in 1945 right through until 2006 when it entered preservation. That’s 61 years in service, and it doesn’t exactly get an easy life now either!

The other thing that surprises people is that it still has the original engine, which just goes to show that if something is well engineered to start with, then it can carry on being really useful for a very long time. So why shouldn’t the same be true for IT equipment?

If you’ve got an ageing CLARiiON or Celerra, then you’re probably thinking it’s about time to replace it with something new. Well, there is certainly a case for buying new products; they can be much faster, and they can save on power, cooling, and rack space in your data centre. But when you compare that to the cost and environmental impact of building, buying and installing a new system, those benefits wane somewhat. And you’ve probably got to learn something new and migrate all your data across – data that is often pretty stale and quite possible doesn’t need the earth-shattering performance that a shiny new storage array can offer.

So why not keep it going for a few more years? Especially if it’s no longer holding your most valuable Tier One data. This is where LifecycleStor comes in. We can provide that essential cover to keep your older equipment running. OK, we can’t write software updates for it, but with a well-established and mature product, how many software updates do you need? What we can do is to replace disks when they fail, as well as other things like power supplies. But the majority of this equipment just goes on and on, largely trouble-free for many years. So why not stick with what you know, and let it work a bit harder for you for a few years longer.
